Britain has not left Europe, despite some of the headlines that seem to suggest some sort of tectonic shift. Britain has voted to leave the European Union (EU) but will continue to be a major European economy, like other non-EU European nations such as Norway or Switzerland, whose voters rejected becoming part of the union. However, no country has ever left the EU, therefore there is a great deal of uncertainty about the future. The first thing to consider is that it will take years for the UK to leave the EU. Britain is not expected to begin negotiating its withdrawal until October 2016 and that will be the start of a maximum two years of negotiations.
