Population growth, urbanization, and climate change are the major trends shaping the future of cities. The UN predicts that the world’s population will grow from 7.7 billion in 2019 to 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 10.9 billion by 2100. Over 55 % of the world’s population already reside in urban areas and the UN expects us to add another 2.5 billion to the world’s urban population by 2050. And, according to UN Habitat, cities consume 78% of the world’s energy and produce more than 60% of greenhouse gas emissions, while accounting for less than 2% of the Earth’s surface.
