This Research Note examines the progress of Siemens Buildings business in establishing the Siemens Xcelerator open ecosystem for its Building X suite, a year on from the launch of their software, open platform and co-innovation strategy.

The Building X smart buildings SaaS software suite was launched in June 2022 by the Buildings business of Siemens Smart Infrastructure.

The Siemens Xcelerator platform and marketplace, announced in parallel with Building X, is an open ecosystem that enables co-creation between customers, Siemens, and certified partners ranging from the largest tech companies to independent software developers with the aim of making digital transformation easier, faster and scalable.

Certified partners in the Xcelerator ecosystem include both startups and established firms in the smart buildings landscape, who are creating integrations with Siemens Building X software, Desigo CC building management systems or Siveillance security solutions.

As of 12th July 2023, there are 24 Siemens Xcelerator Partners addressing the commercial buildings market – including Attune, Bueno, Copper Labs, Flash, Genea, Halio, Interel, Kone, Pointr, Quuppa, Setmetrics, Sunbird, Vigilent, Violet Defense.

Three partners were newly onboarded to Siemens Xcelerator Marketplace between January and April 2023: Setmetrics, Bueno Systems and Sunbird.

Welcoming the new Siemens Xcelerator partners, Peter Halliday, CEO of Siemens Australia and New Zealand said, “We need to support Australia’s requirement for rapid digital transformation - and although Siemens is the largest industrial software and automation company in the world, we also know we can’t do it on our own. We need complementary partners to help deliver the most comprehensive solutions for customers.”

Bueno Systems (BUilt ENvironment Optimisation) is a Melbourne-based Australian provider of building analytics software supporting decarbonization. Originally part of the mechanical contracting company Airmaster Australia, Bueno became an independent privately owned company in 2017, following the acquisition of Airmaster by Daikin.

Bueno's Smart Building Analytics gathers and analyzes large amounts of data from building systems, which can help optimize building performance, reduce energy consumption, exceed sustainability & ESG targets and improve occupant comfort.

Its software is used in around 1,500 buildings worldwide, including offices, shopping malls, grocery stores and casinos. Customers include Dexus, Vicinity, Westfield, Mirvac, Woolworths, Crown, Investa and Lendlease. The company also has major clients in USA, Canada and India.

Melbourne-based Australian startup, Setmetrics has developed an energy performance optimization cloud SaaS platform which digitizes the end-to-end processes involved in building refurbishment and retrofits, at the building, portfolio or city level. Using advanced simulation technology to build a digital twin tethered to the actual building, the EnergyPlus baseline model predicts hourly energy usage across major energy subsystems in a building over a year or a lifetime.

The front end gives access to detailed and accurate engineering-grade data and analytical tools to improve and optimise building performance - developing an asset master plan to meet key objectives from energy efficiency to building code compliance, tenant comfort and emissions.

The software aims to reduce the time and complexity for modelling and achieving goal-optimized capital planning, whilst driving decarbonization and ESG initiatives across a building or portfolio.

Setmetrics and Siemens have a global relationship across the Building X portfolio, including Siemens’ digital twin platform, and asset planning software systems.

Sunbird provides second-generation Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software which enables data center professionals to centrally track and manage all their resources, relationships, and dependencies across their entire estate in a single pane of glass.

With this tool, organizations can make smarter data center management decisions to better achieve their sustainability, productivity, efficiency, and cost-containment goals.

Based in the United States, since 2007, Sunbird DCIM software has been used globally by 1,600+ customers across hundreds of thousands of racks to manage millions of assets and monitor billions of data points every day.

Memoori believes that Siemens Xcelerator strategy has enabled them to significantly improve their co-creation and software partnerships for smart commercial buildings. By acknowledging that they cannot work alone, they are deepening their alliances with both startups and established firms, creating more unified software for building operations.
