Originally founded by famed particle physicist Frank Oppenheimer in 1969, San Francisco’s Exploratorium moved to Pier 15, its current location, in 2013 and set a target of becoming the world’s biggest net zero carbon museum. 10-years later the 220,000-square foot attraction achieved its goal, which it hopes will inspire others around the world. The Exploratorium was awarded LEED Platinum certification by the US Green Building Council in 2014 and, as of November 2023, is the largest museum to date to be Zero Energy Verified by the New Buildings Institute. “This achievement is a reminder that net zero energy is a living goal,” added Brad Jacobson, a Principal at the project’s architects, EHDD. “The urgency for climate action has only grown since the Exploratorium opened their doors more than a decade ago.
